Climate Change Education is Multidimensional
Science. Politics. Economics. Emotions. Solutions. Action. Justice.
About Me
I am an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Education at Lakehead University, Orillia, where I teach Climate Change Education (MEd) and Environmental Education (BEd).
I research Canadian K-12 policy and practice of climate change education. I uplift Climate Change Education in Canada as
Associate Editor of the Canadian Journal of Environmental Education,
Co-Chair of the Canada Regional Hub of the Monitoring and Evaluation of Climate Change Education (MECCE) Project,
Community Advisor for Climate Education Reform British Columbia, and
founding moderator of a professional learning community: Climate Change Education in Canada
Youth-Led Community Futures
My research examines how teachers’ practices can foster learning that builds community relationships to develop pathways to inclusive and hopeful futures. Children and young people must be central agents in policy, governance, or curriculum decisions that affect their educational experiences and inherited futures.
My focus is to ensure that educational institutions are authentically addressing the socio-ecological challenges facing communities. With the existential threat of irreversible climate impacts, we have a narrowing window of opportunity, and are required to drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions to hold global warming to 1.5 degrees by 2030. The urgency and change required to safeguard climate stability is being compared to world war efforts.
Learning Together
I teach Environmental Education (B.Ed) and Climate Change Education (M.Ed) in the Faculty of Education and have facilitated professional development workshops with 800 teachers across Canada in the last several years.
